Kerala was the first state in India which started Lotteries in Government sector in 1967 as for providing an occupation to the marginalised section of people and to supplement Government finances.
Lotteries ,started by offering 1st prize amount of Rs 50000 having the ticket cost of Rs 1/- for each ticket manged to collect 20 Lakhs as sales proceeds in 1967, grossed 9876.30 cores as total revenue in its Golden Jubilee year of 2017-18.
The idea soon synced with public and began its successful journey which culminated in to becoming a major sector contributing lion share of non tax revenue resource to the State exchequer.
The policy of stringent regulatory measures taken against illegal lotteries in the last decade and employing IT enabled services in routine business transaction created sufficient background for the Department to grow in terms of revenue generation.
